Scripture Lesson:2 Corinthians 2:5-11
Preacher: J. Threlkeld
Description: Reading 2 Corinthians 2:5-11 The principle of “Forgive as we have been forgiven” also applies to our gathering as a body of believers. The Corinthian congregation thought they were celebrating their Christian freedom. In reality, they were giving full license to their sinful flesh. In one notorious case, a member of the church had taken his father’s wife (1Cor 5:1). The offender was to be placed immediately under church discipline! And then, somewhere between 1 Corinthians 5 and 2 Corinthians 2, something wonderful happened. The man repented! He was to be forgiven and comforted by those who knew the comfort of Christ’s forgiveness. Note the absence of any acts of penance imposed upon him by Paul. He sinned. He repented. He was forgiven and restored to fellowship in the Corinthian congregation. (Recall Luther’s Small Catechism, “Confession has two parts….”) Speaker J.
