Scripture Lesson:Matthew 21:1-11
Preacher: Thomas Rockhoff
Description: Monday – Matthew 21:1-11 A man rode into the city on a donkey; hardly an episode worth noting in Bible times. But note this unique episode. The man knew where the donkey would be tied. The man knew that no one would question his use of the donkey. The man rode a donkey colt, untrained and unbroken. The man fulfilled a prophecy written by Zechariah that the Zion’s King would ride a donkey, and so the man knowingly claimed to be the King. The man’s arrival elicited cries of “Hosanna”—save us—and the confession that he was the Son of David, the name for the eternal Son the Lord had promised David. The man was understood to be coming in the name of the Lord, and his arrival elicited the stirring of the entire city. Who is this man? The prophet from Nazareth in Galilee, but more: Jesus, the omniscient and omnipotent God who arrived as God’s own choice to lay down his life and save the world from Satan, sin, and death. This is the man whose path and passion we follow in the days ahead, and this is the man to whom we cry with the voice of faith: Hosanna! Save us.
