Scripture Lesson:Ephesians 5:21–6:4
Preacher: T. Pankow
Description: Reading Ephesians 5:21–6:4 Paul shows how love in a marriage is based on Christ’s love for the church. Just as Christ is the head of the wife and gave himself for her, so the husband is head of the wife and serves not himself, but her. Just as the church submits to Christ, so the wife submits to the husband. The world refuses to accept this relationship. Paul defends the relationship not by appealing to social norms, but to the norm of God’s institution recorded in Genesis 2. While Paul’s immediate purpose is to describe God-pleasing roles in a marriage, he can’t help being preoccupied with the marvelous message of what Christ has done for his bride, the church. Christ’s love for his church is the ultimate reality and the perfect pattern for the husband to follow. It’s the motivation to do what God asks and the strength to put that resolve into practice. It also gives peace to the troubled sinner-saint who has failed to live up to this ideal. You stand before God radiant, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless, cleansed by your Savior in the waters of your baptism! Speaker T.
