Scripture Lesson:Amos 5:6-15
Preacher: A. Carter
Description: Reading Amos 5:6-15 It is a horrible sight to see the nation of Israel in the last years of its existence. Although living in relatively prosperous time, the rejection of the nation had become so acute that this was a time of immorality, corruption of the legal system, and oppression of the poor. Less than a generation would pass before God’s patience would finally break and he would allow the Assyrians to take the nation into captivity, never to be heard of again. Yet even in the midst of such unbelief, God calls the nation to repentance through the prophet Amos: Seek me and live! Though not referring to this specific episode, Paul urges us, “There things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did” (1 Cor 10:6ff). Let everyone observe how the love of money can consume and destroy! “Be careful that you are standing firm,” Paul wrote. And let us all view the gracious God who continues to call even the worst sinners to repentance and faith. Speaker A.
