Scripture Lesson:Mark 10:17–27
Preacher: Prof. Otto
Description: Reading Mark 10:17–27 In all of our hearts is a rich man who feels pretty good about all that he’s done; who is certain that, if anyone deserves heaven, he does; but who in the light of God’s law finally sees the reality – his life has been one of idolatry. In this crushing moment of despair, we realize the truth of what Jesus says to his disciples. It is impossible for man to save himself. However righteous, pious, or godly we may think we are, we have utterly failed to keep God as the treasure of our hearts. Instead, we’ve replaced him with whatever seems more important at the time and fooled ourselves into thinking that we’re still on track spiritually. As Jesus crushed the rich man and his disciples, so he crushes us. But he immediately gives us reason to rejoice by proclaiming that our salvation is possible with God. We can do nothing for our salvation, true; but God can and has done everything that is needed. He sent his Son, Jesus, to be our treasure!
