Scripture Lesson:1 John 4:1-6
Preacher: Karl DeMarce
Description: Reading: 1 John 4:1-6 Our lesson from 1 John tells us to “test the spirits,” an especially important encouragement as we evaluate those who would serve as undershepherds of the Good Shepherd. We are told not to believe every spirit, or influence, but δοκιμάζετε τὰ πνεύματα, test them like someone inspecting for counterfeit currency. Test to see whether it passes the test. And the test is whether or not they acknowledge that Jesus is the Christ, having come in the flesh. This testing may be harder than it sounds because we hear the message of the world so often and often it looks like it is coming from those “of God”. Even at church we can be distracted by the world and be led to think that life goes well because we do the right things (go to church, give offering) instead of focusing on the truth pointing to Jesus as the one who has removed our eternal problems and promised to be with us through the temporary ones. It’s anything that tells us not to expect those temporary problems that speaks from the spirit of this world. Verse 4 gives us the comfort that we are those led by the Spirit from God and that our side wins because Jesus is greater than the one with the world.
