Scripture Lesson:Psalm 19
Preacher: Micah Otto
Description: Reading: Psalm 19 Martin Luther commented on Psalm 19 saying, “Psalm 19 is a prophecy of the gospel. It goes out into all the world and is spread abroad under heaven day and night. The old law is removed, and the new law of the gospel shines just like the sun in every land, to teach, enlighten, comfort, and purify everything everywhere.” We conclude our week ending in that radiant light. Many pastors begin their preaching with the words of Psalm 19:14 and with good reason. The תֹּ֘ורַ֤ת יְהוָ֣ה is “perfect,” “precious,” and “pleasing.” This majesty is seen in each use of the law and we see that in this psalm. The law “warns” us. It “discerns” our faults. It “gives light” to our living. This is the beauty of the third use of the law! As Christians, we do our heavenly Father’s will just as our Brother did. We no longer whine and bemoan God’s lofty standards, but we rejoice in having the unique opportunity to follow his law! There is no more motivating joy than the words of our God. It truly is the meditations of our hearts. Our joyful obedience assures a deeply authentic and purposeful life. Why? Because our hearts are rooted in the gospel of the perfectly obedient Son.
